There are two gorgeous natural stone options available
for kitchen countertops- marble and granite. Many homeowners prefer the look of
a natural stone as they offer an almost an endless array of colors and
patterns. Kitchen countertops, granite or marble will maintain the fantastic
look for decades, and both require a significant amount of care. Granite
happens to be quite popular countertop choice for both modern and traditional
houses. While marble is a classic choice for high-end homes. Granite and marble
are made up of different minerals; hence they perform differently in terms of
chemical resistance and hardness. It is therefore better to know about both
these natural stones before choosing either of them.
Talking about the appearance, the aesthetic differences
between marble and granite are matters of taste. Granite has grains, which
appear as specks. Granite contains a variety of hues like red, pink, orange,
green, blue in medium to dark shades. Marble has pattern, while the color is
fairly consistent with veins running through it. Granite countertops are
durable and are known for resisting chips and cracks and the spills wipe away
easily. Marble on the other hand is porous and vulnerable to acidic liquids and
foods. Both the natural stones are heat resistant and are durable, provided
they are sealed in one or two years.
If the faded seals are not replaced, both the stones can
get easily marred by wine, juice, oil or anything acidic. Experts believe that
granite requires moderate maintenance, while marble requires comparatively high
maintenance. Minor damage can be handled easily, but in case of bigger
problems, both marble and granite require professional help. Both granite and
marble are extremely heavy and difficult to handle, therefore installation
requires professional help. Marble is pricier than granite; in order to save
money on marble, choose tiles instead of slabs.
